Fill dirt is a common stable for construction projects in Louisiana. But what is fill dirt, and which type is best for your project? There are a few different factors that contractors and builders should consider. Read on to learn about the different types of fill dirt so you can make the best choice for your build.

What is Fill Dirt?

So what is fill dirt, anyway? Well, that might be pretty obvious from its name. Fill dirt can help you level ground, make elevation changes, and fill in low spots during your build. It’s a simple material, but it can be a necessary component for your construction project.

Common Fill

Common fill is the standard fill dirt that’s generally used in construction. It’s not made to meet any set guidelines, so keep that in mind if you choose this fill. Common fill is inexpensive and readily available, making it great for large-scale projects or builders on a budget.

Select Fill

Unlike common fill, select must meet a select Plasticity Index specification as outlined by a geotechnical engineer. Select Fill is a 60/40 mix of lean clay to sand. It can be excavated in a natural state or blended during excavation. Primarily used to elevate a project with a stable foundation. This is a necessary option to balance out a high clay content in our inherited Louisiana soils. It’s also used near things like retaining walls and drainage channels. Select fill can be made to fit any of your soil requirements, so give us a call to learn more about your needs.

Other Materials

Common and select fill aren’t the only fill materials used on construction projects. Lots of materials, including sand, aggregates, and clay can also be used. Topsoil is also a common option. We offer many different types of fill, so call our team for more information.
